“I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.”
Stuart Smalley, fake motivational speaker, SNL
Have you ever been in this situation? You’re having a great day, but then you realize your forgot to return an important call. Instead of thinking “I’ll call her back now,” your brain is filled with negative, ugly thoughts: “Ugh, I’m the worst. I never follow up with my customers. No wonder I can’t be successful in my business, I’m horrible at it.”
Our brains are computers, processing millions of thoughts and cataloging them, without any direction from us. What we think, it stores. And it catalogs that information for easy retrieval. When you burn dinner and think “I’m a horrible cook. Why do I waste my time trying out these new recipes? I can’t cook.” And then see a great new recipe you want to try, your brain will remind you that you cannot cook. It doesn’t matter if you’ve studied at the fanciest culinary schools and won season two of Top Chef, if you’ve said “I can’t cook,” your brain believes you.
You are the EXPERT WITNESS TESTIMONY for your brain. What you tell it, it believes! And the more emotion tied to statement, the more valid your brain sees it. Positive emotion, negative emotion, your brain doesn’t care. It sees it as evidence that the statement is true.
Not only that, your brain is the google of your body. Google Kim Kardashian selfie one time and you will be looking at Kim Kardashian photos every single time you get online.
It can be overwhelming and can sabotage your success. But here’s the thing: YOU control your brain. And you can train your brain for positivity with affirmations. Affirmations are positive, specific statements designed to overcome negative thoughts. They help you believe in and create the positive things you want to see in your life.
I control my mind and my emotions. I choose to be happy and filled with joy. Only those thoughts which serve me well are welcome in my mind.
Money flows to me effortlessly. I attract it and am good with it.
I run a successful business which gives me financial freedom to create the life of my dreams.
I have all of the tools I need to be successful. Opportunity is attracted to me and I seize it.
I have enough time and energy to do all of the things I need to do to be successful.
I am becoming more successful every day. I am always in the right place at the right time and make good choices.
Successful people are drawn to me; I am building my business and helping them create the lives of their dreams.
I am excited about the day ahead. I am inspired and will accomplish everything I need to today.
I am happy and content with my life. I know the best is yet to come and blessings are barreling my way.
Thoughts are seeds, we plant them and they grow, whether we want them to not! The negative messages about ourselves (I’m lazy, I don’t have enough time, I can’t) will rear their ugly little heads in our moments of weakness. But they can be overcome with affirmations. Write your own, focusing on the areas in which you are struggling, keep them positive, keep them present (I am, not I will) and BELIEVE THEM!
So tell me, what are some of your favorite affirmations?
